La Catrina
I really look forward to Jessie’s selections on the featured art review and write up. Jessie didn’t disappoint me….. She has found a new young artist Sylvia Ji. The piece she has chosen is called La Catrina. I think you will find her portayal of this skeletal woman often seen on El Dia de Los Muertos fascinating!!!!
Sylvia Ji in her work, La Catrina, the skeletal woman often seen in the Mexican holiday, El Dia de Los Muertos, which honors and celebrates the dead, she brings this icon into the contemporary. Ji, a San Francisco native, is well-known for using the model of La Catrina in various illustrations, but in this piece, she puts flesh and a human face on her thus making her more human.
